Women in Exile project, Huddersfield Women Centre 2019

This collaborative artwork was created in partnership with women in exile at the Women Centre in Kirklees. Brought together from across the globe, including Libya, Brazil, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Russia, the Netherlands, and Uzbekistan, we stitched our shared and individual experiences into fabric using thread, human hair, and words.

Each piece in the work features a word or proverb written in our native languages, expressing deeply personal reflections on displacement, identity, and the many forms of oppression we have faced. Through these stitched messages, we found a way to voice what is often left unspoken, across language barriers, political borders, and cultural silence.

Led by artist Kani Kamil, with support from Kate Smith and sponsorship from Feminist Space, this project is a testament to collective resilience. Fabric, Thread, Human Hair weaves together our stories, turning pain into solidarity, memory into art, and silence into resistance.
